A brief overview on Africa

You may say that Africa is on the other side of the world –  Probably true! At a time when conditions are improving for many people in the world, the hard-scrabble existence of many Africans seem to go on, despite sustained efforts by African governments, civil society and international community. Of the 48 least developed countries in the world, 33 are in Africa. Today, 365 million Africans – roughly 50 per cent – live in absolute poverty, and Africa is the only region in the world where poverty is expected to increase during this decade. No wonder Africa has been referred to as the "forgotten continent".

We believe, however, that the time is ripe for the "African Lion" to roar – to signal the awakening of the "Sleeping Giant -Africa" and be felt within the global socio-economic front. How? – via a systems-wide Special Initiative (SI) on Africa. Broadly, the SI can be divided into two major functions: those that require substantial resource mobilization and implementation, and those calling mainly for strengthening and rationalizing existing efforts through sustainable use of indigenous-based local resources – human and natural resources – mainly geared towards integrated sustainable development from rural-to-national and finally international level. Realizing these goals will also promote the empowerment of women – the backbone of rural labour force – an effort that will have a clear impact on sustainable development, through more manageable population growth rates and enhanced human welfare. It will further, offer enormous opportunities for Africa to leap-frog over past development deficiencies and into the future. Being left out could mean being left behind with far reaching consequences to Africa's future, its people and the world society at large.

In S&T and R&D, for example, in the West, especially the United States and recently, Asian and Pacific rim countries commonly referred to as "Asian Tigers", transformation, innovation, discovery and scientific & technological excellence make up the cornerstone and history of research and development in these countries. Moreover, today global network of scientists and engineers continues these quests backed by a commitment to core research competencies, and protection of the the environment – an effort that is still a far cry in Africa. However, our effort at AIFRPSEE combined with its dedicated scientist should overcome this within the next decade.

The Center when fully operational is expected to host some of Africa's best brain-power who are either working as consultants or on-full time appointments, including volunteers. We have also expect to have a pool of both local and international visiting experts and consultant that can be called upon to execute our programs. The combined staff, who are sourced from fields ranging from social and applied sciences, engineering, medical sciences to information technology (IT), have only one common goal - a commitment to equipping Africa to meet the challenges in the next millennium. The Center will further endeavour to provide an excellent leadership and expertise which aims at the development of national and regional strategies in capacity building in key sectoral areas in Africa.
